Jis tann lãgé, soee jãné
*only she whose body is hurt, knows (*Gauri Gill, 1984)
As part of a consultation responding to Contemporary Challenges to Secularism in India organised by Alternative Law Forum maraa curated ‘Jis tann lãgé, soee jãné ‘ a photography exhibition featuring the works of Gauri Gill, Javed Iqbal, Subrata Biswas and Vivek Singh.
At a time when where horror, grief and violence is consumed via sensational headlines, cacophonic debates and bland facts, these images images appear as fermatas, a symbol of musical notation indicating that the note should be prolonged beyond its normal duration. Pain has knowledge, like memory. It does not pass. It stays with a seething presence, unknown to us. The images selected hope to provoke, that which was not buried.
